No more ANS 700/150

It is a sad day — the RouseHouse file server (albemuth, a ANS 700/150) has lost its zap.
I'm guessing a bad CPU card (or something really odd) as the machine powers up but gives no LCD
messages or wakeup chime. Now I've got to figure out what to do with five 4 GB Barracuda HDs and
see if I can get anything off the backup tapes.

The house is a lot quieter, but I really do need a file server. At least I say
I need one.

Site news

I'm working on my New Year's resolution, I'm moving from Adobe's GoLive to Barebone's BBEdit for maintenance
of the web site. I like GoLive, but I need to keep my knowledge of HTML up, so it's back to the text editor I go.
For right now I'm also removing the scripting on the front page, few people noticed it anyway.

Valis introduction

Thank heavens for nice quiet weekends. I've finally got a chance to update harp and bishop and get a workable
setup for valis. Oh yeah — valis is the newest edition to the RouseHouse computer room, a Sun SPARCserver 1000 with
dual CPUs, but with the capacity for a total of eight. Valis will be the new main house file server. For the
next couple of days the cam will be pointing at valis so you all can get a good look.

I haven't had a lot of time for just browsing, but here is an
interesting defence of Napster.

Site notes

I'm still working on converting the maintenance of the site to BBEdit. It's interesting to see how closely the
GoLive stuff matches the BBEdited stuff, even though the BBEdited pages are much simpler. Again, I'm not knocking
Adobe — I'm just pointing out the difference between design and upkeep.

Indeed, if I was really smart I'd have some kind of weblog form to
update then site and have a cool dynamic back-end for it.

As you might have noticed, I've been on a online comics kick lately. Recently I've found an interesting
interview with Berke Breathed (Bloom County) by two guys that draw online comics.
It is interesting to get his view of the whole publish-via-Internet thing. That, of course, led me to track down
some information on William Watterson who drew Calvin
and Hobbes.

I apologize for this having nothing to do with Amish midget porn.

Stranger than Japan

I can't even imagine what they have planned for this — and I have no
idea what they are doing with this. The Internet is stranger than
Japan. Of course, sometimes
the Internet is Japan.

Dangerous mixed drinks

Via Fark, a collection
of some of the most dangerous mixed drinks
known to man (or Spock).

I've been busy lately with valis and trying to get it to route AppleTalk. But I've been thinking about the
next two Wayward Packet stories. First, another dream restaurant (this time with a visible robot kitchen and a
dance club called "Les Subliminals") and second a 21st Century version of "My Fair Lady."

Zero Wing!

Okay, here goes —
"War was beginning" ...
"What Happen?" ...
"You are on the way to destruction." ...
"For great justice!"

Thank you, I just had to get that out of my system.

Randomness

This isn't satire, it is an
actual business venture (via
Slashdot). For more vaguely unsettling
developments in our modern age, turn to Salon's look at how one
fashion house wants to
turn you into a number. If you are still
up to it, check out this reminder that our drug laws
don't make sense.

But life isn't all bad, stop and smell the super novas.
