Still life with lamp

I've been working with Adobe's Photoshop CS "Camera Raw" import plug-in and comparing it with Canon's "File Viewer Utility" (which converts Raw images to TIFF files or JPGs).

Although both can send 16-bit data to Photoshop, the Photoshop plug-in works with either the normal "File : Open..." command or with Photoshop's very nice file browser (at least as of CS it is nice). The Canon utility also seems to work a bit slower than the Photoshop plug-in.

The Photoshop Raw plug-in also has more and more precise controls over the image. The user can correct for things like lens vignetting and chromatic aberration, in addition to sharpness, tone and contrast.

The plug-in also has better image navigation — it is easier to zoom in to a comfortable level to see image detail. Beyond the zoom, the plug-in is a more attractive interface, but if you don't have Photoshop CS, the utility give a photographer a free way to work with Raw mode images.
