Switching to Vonage

I had gotten this call from my traditional phone company about signing up for this new plan that would give me more features (that I don't use) at a lower price.

Lower price? Fine, sign me up.

Looking at my bill, it seems that I'm still going to be paying about $39 a month for something I hardly ever use. This is useless and stupid.

A while back I had been in Best Buy and I had picked up a Vonage pamphlet. These guys were willing to give me 500 "anywhere" minutes for $15 a month, less than half the cost I'm paying the traditional phone service. No long distance fees, and yes, I'll be getting all of those dumb features I don't use.

So I'm going to give Vonage a try. I've started an account with them and they are going to ship me the VoIP equipment. I'm sure I'll let everyone know how it works.

The only odd thing is that I'll probably have an exchange in a different town than the one I live in. So it might be long distance to call my house from next door. Oh well, no one really calls the house anyway — I've got a perfectly good cell phone.

So why keep a non-cell phone at all?

Well, first I'd like to try out the VoIP technology, and second I'd like to have a legitimate phone number I can give business that isn't my cell phone. That way sales pitches don't follow me around and I can ignore them if I want.
